PRICING METHODS

LUMP SUM  VS. TIME & MATERIALS

A fixed price estimate is a single fixed price for the entire scope of work, agreed upon before the project begins. The price does not change regardless of actual time or materials expended.

A time and materials estimate bills the client for actual labor hours at a defined rate plus the cost of materials. The price increases if the project runs long or changes are made.

The fundamental difference is risk allocation: fixed price places cost risk on the contractor, while time and materials places it on the client.

ARTISANRY VS. INDUSTRY: THE PARADIGM SHIFT

Value is inherently ambiguous. Abstracted and ever changing, responsive, and unassigned, it is cultivated by the world which holds it.

We live in an industrialized world, but this has not always been the case. The paradigm shift from feudalism to industrialism transformed not only mechanisms of production, but societal perception of value. Industrial standards for speed, convenience and affordability have become the metric by which value is measured. More than a century of social conditioning has undermined the inherent value of artisan labor rooted not in speed, convenience, or affordability, but in the individuality of product, embodied skill, and time invested.

In the industrialized world, the artisan competes with societal perception of value. Justifying  love, talent, and time against the industrial machine. These metrics cannot be scaled against one and other. Their value lies in their opposition.

This work is personal, it is individualized, and it is rare. Unreplicatable, with a human touch that industry cannot sell.
